Barb’s Wordy Blurbs: “Writing Between the Lines” by Nolcha Fox

Nolcha Fox has a new book coming out called Writing Between the Lines. I just had to share this cover. It’s amazing! I’ve read it because I was asked to write a blurb, which is below. I think the form is interesting. Nolcha writes poetic lines between two lines by another poet. Nolcha’s lines provide a response as well as a new perspective.

Amazon Book Description

Each natural jewel has its own unique brilliance. Catch the fire in a diamond and it’s like no other. As Nolcha catches the fire from other’s poems, these reflections create a whole new light show. As you read through the poems, you may find remnants of life’s experience weaving through. Like the light streams through stained glass windows, there are illuminations, sun dogs of brilliance, fractures melded into brilliant streams of color, of light.

Nolcha Fox is fearless. She walks the literary tightrope between success and failure with grace and elegance and she never ever disappoints. For my money, she’s simply one of the most remarkable writers to come along in years.

Nolcha Fox’s new poetry book, Writing Between the Lines, is a keen collection of poems that begin and end with two lines from another poet’s poem. Although two lines are credited to another poet, the reader is taken into a new story and resolution decorated with vivid imagery and metaphors.

“Writing Between the Lines” by Nolcha Fox is a collection that surprises at every turn. Written as part of a 30-poems-in-30-days challenge, each piece begins and ends with borrowed lines from other poets, yet what happens in between is unmistakably Fox’s own voice.

The poems move effortlessly between humour and heartbreak. In “Drunk,” night, sleep, and dawn stumble together like a merry band of revellers, while “My Father’s Death” cuts deeply with raw grief and memory. “Dog Days” transforms the sun into a mischievous dog splashing through a creek, while “Keep Things Simple” delivers biting dark wit.

Nolcha Fox excels at capturing the contradictions of human experience, sorrow and absurdity, longing and laughter. Her imagery is sharp, her tone daring, and her honesty uncompromising.

City, City

I was like you once, he added, in love with turbulence.
I was a red ball bounced against billboards by circumstance.
I was a freeway under orange-barrel construction.
My angry commute was eaten by streetlights.
The city is a myth of silence.
The city — the city is where I disappear.

First and last lines from Louise Gluck’s poem, “Aboriginal Landscape”

Flight

You move through shards and splinters,
brown leaves swirling, falling, on the brambles,
a fluttering heart, wings worn to shreds.
Melodies I cannot hear
beckon you to unknown country.
I follow, you don’t see me, know me.
I, a clod of half-baked mud,
and you a bird in oblique flight.

First and last lines from Rosmarie Waldrop’s poem, “A Valentine That Can’t Be Sent”

A beautiful Book Description and wonderful blurb and praise! So interesting, to have the first and last line borrowed from other poets! Again, congratulations to Nolcha on this new release! 💕

I ordered Too Much Fun to Be Legal just yesterday, the Kindle edition, and for now I can’t wait to get down to reading it, some time in the following weeks… 😊 (the cute funny cover so convinced me, I now have to make an effort not to open it in my Kindle Reader, at least not before going through the other books on my list already ☺) Also, the cover of Writing Between the Lines is gorgeous! ☀

Thanks, Nicole! Barbara and I had lots of fun writing the poems (and one short story) for Too Much Fun to Be Legal. The front cover photo was taken by my mother (as was the photo of the stained glass window). Enjoy!

Thank you, Teagan! Nolcha and I have co-written two poetry books with independent publishers, and I have two of my own with two others. I saw Juan’s review of your book on flowers and fans and jsut ordered a paperback copy. It looks gorgeous!

Thank you, Tim. The approach was interesting? I don’t see many poets use it.
