Diminishing

I grow shorter as I age.
High heels don’t help
to reach that shelf.
I’ll have to call
my husband.
He’s a foot taller
than me.

Otherwise, I’m a monkey
scaling shelves at the supermarket -
or using the grabber tool I was given
after my hip replacement -
to snag containers.

Supermarket shelves fell down,
last time I tried to reach the Spam.
Canned goods, bottles, scattered,
shattered down Aisle 3 and 4.
Now the market manager
won’t let me shop without escort.
I just ride electric carts,
let someone else
do all the work.

Not just a monkey,
but a NASCAR wannabe.
I’m told I took off
at high speed
toward Aisle 6, toppling
a kiosk of cans of pumpkin
and evaporated milk,
quickly scattering
a queue of shoppers
and their carts laden with food
for Thanksgiving dinner.

Getting shorter doesn’t mean
that I’m any less
dangerous.

I look forward to attending. Love the poem too, what a fun and humorous post. I am so short I often stand on the bottom shelf to reach items that are on that tall shelf. So happy that you two finally did this. Big hugs and congratulations to both of you.
