I am delighted to present the third in a series of readings from Barbara Harris Leonhard’s debut poetry collection, Three-Penny Memories, A Poetic …

Poetry Reading from Barbara Harris Leonhard and Launch Event news!

I am so grateful to Ingrid Wilson (EIF-Experiments in Fiction) for her beautiful work on my poetry collection. She’s polished it up like a fine diamond. My hope is that this book will reach many daughters and sons who are caregivers to their parents.

Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia (or let’s face it, any debilitating illness) are painful to experience for all concerned. We caregivers are often too busy to find support and respite care. I was sure I wanted to share my story as I felt so unheroic. However, others may benefit from knowing that they are not alone.

We face an increase in the aging population and thus the incidence of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia is on the rise. We need to examine how we can offer the elderly quality care. Many are childless, possibly completely alone and vulnerable, unable to navigate important matters, like finding insurance. Mom was dropped by one company because she had two policies! She had forgotten that I helped her set all that up. My book gives other examples of how vulnerable Mom was and how watchful I had to be. (I say “I”, but a brother moved here and helped out when I couldn’t be available to Mom.)

I have more to share on my post with the poem about caregiving. I hope you have time to read that post, as well.
