Collaborature published the following collaboration between me and my husband. I sometimes write poems to photos he takes on his river kayaking ventures or hikes. Check out the beautiful presentation on Collaborature!

Sun Dog*

The setting sun peers through clouds.

A sun dog arches its back, stretching

the light across the river. Night sneaks

onto California Island**. The lone hiker

heads home on a path lit by rainbow dusk.

*A sun dog is a halo of light that “faithfully follows the sun”.

**California Island is one of the many sandbars on the Missouri River that emerges when the river is low. It gets its name from its shape. To get to this sandbar, you take a pretty walk along the river and then maneuver down a slope. I’ve done the walk, but my joints won’t allow me to descend down to California Island. It would be fun to look for petrified wood, fossils, and rocks. We have bags and bags of Dierik’s treasures. Dierik made a film of one of his walks to California Island. It starts at what we called the Vulture Tower, an electrical tower which was being replaced. We miss seeing the rows of vultures on the rungs of the old tower.

A wonderful poem, Barbara. These lines are extraordinary: A sun dog arches its back, stretching the light across the river.
