Supersize Me — Spillwords

Published by

on

I have a new poem up on Spillwords. In April 2022, I participated in Wombwell Rainbow’s poetry-writing marathon during Poetry Month. I wrote a rough draft of this poem to the surreal image of an iceberg balancing on the edge of glass of bourbon. I thought about the ice caps melting away as our waist bands grow due to our uncontrolled eating. Our super-sized diets contribute to excess greenhouse emissions and global warming. This poem is a tongue-in-cheek description of excess. Because people make New Year’s resolutions to lose weight and get into shape, I think this poem is relevant at this time.

Supersize Me

When you order a bourbon on ice,
he asks, “Would you like a glacier with that?”
No surprise about size. The 16-inch dinner plate
heaves a 20-ounce T-bone
and a basin of fries on the side.

You’ve already foraged
at the All-You-Can-Eat Salad Bar –
so long it is marked with trail signs.
“This way to the tater salad”. You can lodge
At Ranch Dressing. Rest at Mayo Clinic.

(Kindly continue to Spillwords Press to read the rest of the poem.)

This is such a clever poem, Barbara! It made me laugh because it reminded me of all the buffets I’ve visited and all the gross people I saw in them!

Yes! It’s easy to get addicted to food, and eating out is fun and easier than cooking.
