Sonnet to Grief
In Memory of Linda
You’re a flamingo stretching its wings to the rising sun
A hummingbird gathering dew drops from my tears
and dashing about, like bees do from stamen to stamen
You’re the winter wind that left her burning lungs
and the icy pond where she rests to extinguish a fire
ravaging in her core. A diminishing ocean shore—
Her last drink, sap, tapped from a metal tree.
Her only lucid dream, an induced midnight scream
The dawning rainbows blaze out of sight
We are her crowd applauding oncoming tears
We count the peeping of chicks, our hatched fears
We flutter in stillness, a vigil for hope unseen
Grief, you’re the shadow slipping from her unlit eyes—
We lose sight of the one we will forever love.
We lost Linda to melanoma this year, and we miss her every day. Cancer sucks! Please be wary. Check for changes in moles and new growths on your skin. I trust the Mayo Clinic. Here is their explanation of what melanoma is and how it’s treated. Act quickly if you suspect anything. Melanoma is aggressive.
