Songs for Dusk and Dawn

SINGING with the SETTING SUN

Release into Dreams

As you set between the branches of the oak tree, may I see clearly how the day now dips its head, like a sunflower nodding asleep under your gaze. I give you, the setting fire, all that no longer serves me. May it melt into orange light behind the trees and hills. I have lived a full day with some unrest, pain, grief, ungrounded thinking. I give you my worry, doubt, fear, for my body can no longer support them. I lean toward you, the setting sun, with my palms open to release all ills, like tiny birds to a new sky.

Gratitude

As the sun rests, so may I with a grateful heart. As I enter into night rest, I express my gratitude for a full day. Thank you for the lessons learned and the gifts bestowed. The blessings given. For all toil and all triumph, I am grateful. For all guidance, I am grateful. For all insights and gifts, I am grateful. For wisdom, I am grateful. That my heart has opened to joy, I am truly grateful. May I be a clear vessel of Your love as it flows to those requesting healing. May that warmth and strength sink into their beings as the sun sets into a cycle of renewal so that we may all reconnect in new light.

SINGING with the RISING SUN

Trust in a New Day

As the sun rises, my heart is a sunflower, opening its eyes to the East. How the sun rises in color just as it sets. I am drawn to the warmth of its brilliance and promise of a new day. On this day, I will be strong, free of pain. I feel Mother Earth pulling grief down and out of my feet into her temple for healing. My dreams have gathered the worry and fear and now release these burdens into the arms of Mother Earth. How she transmutes this bundle into new gardens. If only I can see the potential in each seed and not hoard my bounty like a cache of hidden treasure. Letting go is the gold. Trusting. Surrendering to the rising light all about and within me.

Awash into a Broken Mirror – Barbara Leonhard — FREE VERSE REVOLUTION

I kneel on the rocky shore of the river searching for myself. My image reflects off the shiny water. The glimmer of a familiar face in a tough time. But then, the wind picks up, ripples the waves, Splays my long hair into gray tendrils. In the riffle, one eye opens, one eye closes. My […]

Before Eden Fell

This poem is included in an article I wrote for Phoebe, MD: Medicine + Poetry (https://phoebemd.com/2020/03/12/fire-ice-the-faces-of-grief/).

The article is based on my poetry podcast Grief: Fire and Ice, which features this poem (https://meelosmom.podbean.com/e/grief-fire-and-ice/).

Before Eden Fell

We were all immortal,

our beauty, captured forever

in flora and fauna

so brilliant that light itself

had to blink twice

our true being stood naked

without shame

our reflection more lustrous

than knowing

brilliantine fabric

until the apple fell

into Mother’s soft hands

our Mother, the first to grieve

her garden lost

how she still clings to the maiden

the stunning beauty she once was

now deflowered, exposed to erosion

our Eden, our innocence and purity,

victim to change, to corruption, to decline,

our undoing

no one …. no thing is our eternity

our heaven forever

on this plane

nothing lasts

so we grieve

feeling abandoned by joy

and cast out of a divine place

though we cling to the fading innocence

of our Eden,

we bless grief

Written in Response to Robert Frost, “Nothing Gold Can Stay”

Nothing Gold Can Stay

BY ROBERT FROST

Nature’s first green is gold,

Her hardest hue to hold.

Her early leaf’s a flower;

But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.

So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay.

**Poetry Foundation

My poem ends with, “We bless grief”. Why? I explain in my podcast. 😇

I hope you like my new poetry podcast on Podbean. Poetry: The Memoir of the Soul.

Mother Earth must be talking to me because I have written a lot about her lately. I have a couple of guest poets in this podcast. Walter Bargen and Sharon Singing Moon.

Sorry for any irrelevant noises. I may need a producer! 🤓 There is beauty in imperfection, right?

What Mother Needs: Time to Heal

I revised this poem since putting it up in FREE VERSE REVOLUTION. I’m Still not certain it is finished. Is any poem?

What Mother Needs: Time to Heal

We are all one kind, one child

in the eyes of our wondrous Mother.

Our Mother’s lungs are shared by all;

we all breathe the same air.

Our tears, her rain.

Every cry of a newborn,

recorded on her fabric.

Every gun, shot in fear,

rips through our Mother,

her flesh, her bones, her breath,

and into dark matter out of sight.

Apprehension, the basis of all injury,

creates separation, isolation, animosity.

We are not alone in love.

Love heals torn limbs reaching for embrace.

Love constructs not just our soul,

but the soul of our Mother.

Distain and reverence cannot reside

in the same house.

Despair not. Despise not.

Love those that fear and hate.

This is the great challenge

It is our choice –

In fact, the most important choice,

to cherish with all our heart

regardless of fear of harm,

which is dread of separation and isolation

from our Mother, who supports each of us.

Forgive and hold dear the loveless;

Mother teaches charity and integrity

Even in storms and floods.

This is our choice,

to adore and revere with all our being.

Those who love without abandon

heal all, even our Mother.
